As sisters, we are coming together to equip each other with support, connections & resources to advocate for our rights as women and as refugees, whilst challenging gender discrimination and harmful socio-cultural norms.
As one woman explained in our first consultation when we were founded, “Women survive by just being silent about their situation. They just suffer.”
As Sisterhood, we say: “Now is not the time to give up.”
"We will not be victims who are vulnerable to everything."
We are intentionally and bravely growing a self-led movement of refugee feminist leaders & organisers, whilst knowing the personal risks that this path holds for us.
Power of Sisterhood is our flagship advocacy and learning platform for refugee women to articulate their experiences and collectively advocate for their rights in their communities and with duty bearers.
The Sisterhood’s pathway to transformation starts with our lived experiences, whilst listening to, documenting, amplifying, and respecting the experiences and needs of women in our communities.
Sisters In Justice is a platform for women refugees in Indonesia to deepen our knowledge, skills and confidence to use the law to protect and secure justice for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
Once they have completed the Sisters in Justice training program, our members host awareness workshops for women refugees living in Indonesia in their native languages to explain women’s rights, forms of SGBV and pathways to protection and support for survivors. We also host meetings with men in the community to explain how they can support their sisters to live free from violence.
"This training was very beneficial for us, and we have learned a lot from it. Before we didn't know about our rights and we faced a lot of violence that's against the Indonesian law. We didn't know to whom we should seek assistance. In this training we got all the information that we didn't know before." Participant, 2023.
Researched in partnership with LBH Apik Jakarta and published in 2023, the Guide explains the pathways to seeking legal and non-legal support and services as a refugee women experiencing SGBV in Indonesia. We believe this is the first time this information has been made available in a comprehensive and accessible way.
The full guide explains the different forms of SGBV, the procedures for reporting cases, details of hotlines & services, and how to write a chronology.
A shorter version of the Survivors Guide is also available in Arabic, Farsi and Somali.
