To unite women from all faiths and backgrounds, in a safe space, to promote the rights, well-being, and leadership of refugee women survivors in Indonesia.
“Together we can change women’s experiences of discrimination – there is strength in unity.”
“Together we can look forward. Together we have the will and ability to overcome.”
“Together we have hope; our hope will power our solutions.”
“We support each other regardless of age, colour, race, & ethnicity. Love is the answer to finding our happiness & peace dear sisters.”
“Together we can defend our rights.”
At The Sisterhood, women refugees make the decisions. As a self-led organisation we are creating a new model of how power is exercised in the delivery of services and support to refugee women. Women refugees should never be just objects for other people’s charity or social media.
We have paid close attention to ensuring women refugees can maintain positions of leadership and responsibility in our organisation despite the extremely difficult situations they are in. This requires flexibility, trust, and mutual understanding amongst managers, advisers & funders.
We aim to create a safe women-only space in everything that we do. We realize the widespread impact of trauma amongst our members, and integrate knowledge and lived experience about refugee women’s trauma into our policies, and practices. We evaluate our plans against the principle of “Do No Harm” to avoid exposing members , volunteers or managers to additional risks through our activities.
We only collect or store personal data that is absolutely necessary, and avoid sharing faces or personal identities on social media or with donors unless we have explicit and informed-consent.
We make time for rest and recovery. We move and grow at the pace that suits our members and managers rather than donors or partners.
We facilitate learning to build new perspectives and understanding regarding each woman's situation. This includes respecting all experiences and all women who share their stories. Both the listener and the speaker are in the context of learning.
We coach non-refugees involved in our work so that can understand the situation of refugee women. This is essential in order for them to effectively carry out their roles as collaborators.
It is everyone’s responsibility in the Sisterhood to make our programs safe for all.
The Sisterhood has a zero tolerance towards harm including abuse, exploitation and neglect of children and adults. We work with adults who may be at risk of harm and make special provisions for children.
We recognise that everyone has varying degrees of power and privilege in different circumstances based on their legal status and intersecting identities and that people may experience, or be at risk
of, different types of abuse based on their status and identities.
Our safeguarding includes protecting our volunteers, children, members and others we come into contact with from harm and inappropriate behavior. This includes preventing abuse, discrimination, bullying, and/or harassment in any form, sexual exploitation and abuse and sexual harassment in person or online.
If the Sisterhood management is made aware of complaints or concerns, we will respond to ensure the survivor is safe, protected from repercussions or reprisals and that complaints are reported and addressed internally and externally whilst addressing the risks of causing additional harm. If the law has been broken, the incident may need to be referred to the local authorities.
All reports of harm should be made as soon as possible to a member of the management team.
Reports can also be made by email: safeguarding@powerofsisterhood.net
Complaints can be made anonymously using the online form. However, please be aware that anonymous reporting makes it difficult for the management to fully respond and address the concern.
